He refused Bercy “to stay at the head of the group” of the Republican Right in the Assembly. After the meeting with Michel Barnier, Laurent Wauquiez gathered the deputies of his group to explain what was going on.

“From the beginning, I said that entering the government was not my obsession (and) I said that I would only go if I could be useful to the Ministry of the Interior,” explained Laurent Wauquiez, whose name has long been circulating for the Place Beauveau. He also revealed the first names that appear in the casting of the Barnier government.

In his speech, he gave the names of the LR ministers “transmitted by Michel Barnier” who will be proposed to be part of its executive: Senator Bruno Retailleau for the Interior, MP Patrick Hetzel for Higher Education, MP and LR Secretary General Annie Genevard for Agriculture, Othman Nasrou for Secularism, Jean-Lous Thieriot for Veterans, Laurence Garnier for Family, Sophie Primas for Foreign Trade and Tourism and François-Noël Buffet for Overseas.

The Armies and the Quai d’Orsay belong to what is traditionally called the “reserved domain” of the head of state, on which he intended to have his say.
