New municipal decree against nitrous oxide in public spaces in : the sale of these laughing gas cartridges was already prohibited to minors. From now on, only wholesalers or specialized stores have the right to sell this product. The possession and consumption of nitrous oxide are prohibited in public spaces.

Since Monday, September 16, 2024, in Montpellier, regulations have been tightened against nitrous oxide: it is now prohibited to possess, consume or sell laughing gas on public roads.

Michaël Delafosse has decided to go further to fight against what he considers to be “a scourge that is becoming widespread” : The total ban on the sale of nitrous oxide, outside of wholesalers or specialist shops, is also in effect.

In July 2020, the municipality had already issued a first order to ban the sale of laughing gas to minors..

“In the absence of national regulations, it is up to the Mayor, within the framework of his police powers, to take appropriate measures to prevent disorders and nuisances that affect public health, tranquility and hygiene” city ​​services specify in a press release.

This municipal decree aims to eradicate the sale of these cartridges, available for purchase in more than 200 night grocery stores without any restrictions, despite the ban on sales to minors.

“Several administrative closures of businesses – mostly night grocery stores – have been ordered for illegal sales of certain products including nitrous oxide to minors”the press release underlines.

“Nitrous oxide, the second most consumed drug among 13-25 year olds after cannabis in , is dangerous. Its recreational inhalation presents real health risks.” can be read on the website of the city of Montpellier.

Consumption of this substance can cause motor disorders, altered perception, convulsions, neurological disorders.

The cartridges, consumed in the street and thrown on the ground, pollute the city and harm the environment.

Numerous complaints and petitions from residents have been registered with the municipal and national police services, for threats to security and public peace.
