The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen presented the new team of commissioners for the next five-year termwith a board of directors composed of 40% women and six executive vice-presidents, including four women and two men.

Among the new prominent members are Raffaele Fitto, appointed Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms. Fitto will manage the National Recovery and Resilience Plans (NRRP) together with Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President and Commissioner for the Economy. Fitto has been entrusted with the same portfolio currently held by Portugal’s Elisa Ferreira.

The team reflects a strong geographical and political diversity, with members coming both from states that joined the Union before the fall of the Iron Curtain and from those that joined after the reunification of Europe.

Among the Executive Vice Presidents appear Spain’s Teresa Ribera, in charge of a fair energy transition and in charge of Competition, and ’s Stéphane Séjourné, in charge of Prosperity and Industrial Strategy. The already known Kaja Kallas will be the High Representative, while Finland’s H. Virkkunen will focus on technological sovereignty and security. Romania’s Roxana Minzatu will be in charge of people, skills and preparedness.

Fitto’s appointment was greeted with enthusiasm in Italy, by the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed their satisfaction, seeing it as a sign of Italy’s centrality and credibility in the European Union.Tajani stressed that this appointment confirms the weight that Italy will continue to have in Europe, while Meloni defined Fitto as a protagonist of Italy’s renewed role in the EU.
