The 77th edition of the festival, which will be held from May 14 to 25, has made a historic decision.

It seems that the Film Festival is determined to reward the creators of contemporary myths and fables this year. Indeed, after announcing to award George Lucas the palm of honor for his entire career, the 77e edition will also reward Studio Ghibli in celebration of the many animated films that have made the Japanese studio famous.

Collective work

2024 seems to smile on Hayao Miyazaki. It’s barely been a month since the eminent Japanese filmmaker received an Oscar for his film The Boy and the Heron. The Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences had to choose from works as varied as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Or Nimona. Previously considered to be reserved for a young audience, the world of animation has shone through its ability to address adults. And there was, more recently, his induction into Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people, which earned him a nice tribute from another filmmaker who recently won an Oscar for his own animated film, Guillermo del Toro. The opportunity for the Mexican director to explain why he considers Chihiro’s dad to be ” the most influential host in the history of the medium is one of my 10 favorite storytellers, regardless of the audiovisual medium concerned » before adding that his work provokes a rare emotion. The one we only feel when faced with a “ type of beauty that is impossible to see in the real world and therefore can only exist in its films “.

However, we are witnessing a great first in the history of the Cannes festival: Hayao Miyazaki will not be the only person rewarded with this palm of honor. Indeed, if the studio co-founded by the Japanese artist is at the origin of many of his films such as My Neighbor Totoro or Princess Mononokehe also created masterpieces without Miyazaki such as The Grave of the Fireflies. In their press release, Iris Knoblock and Thierry Frémaux (respectively president and general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival) expressed the reason behind this collective Palme d’Or. According to them, the characters from Studio Ghibli “ populate our imaginations with abundant and colorful universes and sensitive and committed stories » like all the others « cinema icons “.
