Mohammed Abbkr was convicted in Birmingham of attempting to murder two men aged 82 and 70 in February and March 2023 by setting them on fire after dousing them with gasoline.

The two victims had been chosen “at random”, said Judge Melbourne Inman on Wednesday, but the accused was convinced that they were trying to take control of him.

The magistrate stressed that the two attacks had been committed while the accused, suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, was suffering from a “serious mental illness”.

The sentence handed down means that the accused will be treated in a high-security hospital from where he cannot be released or even transferred to a less secure facility without authorization from the Ministry of Justice.

On February 27, 2023 in west London, the accused initiated a conversation with the first victim, an 82-year-old man, as they left the place of worship together. Five minutes later, he doused it with gasoline before lighting it on fire with a lighter.

The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries to his face and arms.

Then on March 20, 2023 in Birmingham, central England, a 70-year-old man was leaving a mosque and returning home when he was attacked in the same way. He was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries.
