Japanese animation studio Ghibli is preparing to receive an honorary Palme d’Or during the 2024 Film Festival.

In addition to that awarded to George Lucas, a second Honorary Palme d’Or will be allocated, during the Cannes Film Festival 2024. And for the first time in the history of the festival, it becomes collective by honoring the entire Studio Ghibli, THE japanese animation studio embodied by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.

“For the first time in its history, it is not a person but an institution that we wish to celebrate. Like all cinema icons, these characters populate our imaginations with abundant and colorful universes and sensitive and committed stories. With Ghibli, Japanese animated cinema, is experienced as one of the great adventures of cinema, between tradition and modernity.” thus explained Iris Knoblochthe president of the Cannes Film Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, the general delegate.

It must be said that in forty years of existence and more than one twenty feature filmsTHE Studio Ghibli has amazed more than one, young and old movie buffs alike.

“I am truly honored and that the studio received the Honorary Palme d’Or. I thank the Cannes Film Festival from the bottom of my heart. Forty years ago, Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and I created the Studio Ghibli with the desire to offer top animated films and high quality to children and adults of all ages. Today, audiences around the world can see our films, and many visitors come to the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka and Ghibli Park to experience the world of our films for themselves. We’ve come a long way from making Studio Ghibli this big. Although Miyazaki and I have gotten older, I am certain that the Studio Ghibli will continue to take on new challenges, under the leadership of teams who will perpetuate the spirit of the company. I would be delighted if you continue to be interested in our achievements.” said Toshio Suzuki, co-founder of Studio Ghibliupon the announcement of this Honorary Palme d’Or.
