Although the investigation is still ongoing and it is not possible to determine beyond any doubt the cause of the incident, several clues lead us to believe that the fire occurred at the end of an explosion according to the Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard public safety and fire director, Éric Fulker. “According to the information we have, a gas leak occurred in the residence. The residents smelled it, went inside and it was when they came out that there would be an explosion […] When we arrived, the walls were shattered and objects were found about fifty feet from the residence, ”explains Mr. Fulker.
Note that the Sureté du Québec confirms that for the moment the case is not being treated as arson.
The worst avoided
According to Eric Fulker, the fire would have momentarily spread to the surrounding forest and was heading towards nearby residences. However, it would have been contained by the combined efforts of the fire departments of Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard, Saint-Sauveur, Morin-Heigths, the Régie Incendie des Monts and SOPFEU. “We first focused our efforts on cooling the 400 liter propane tank to prevent it from exploding.”
Currently, a security perimeter has been created and the propane tank has been emptied. “Everything is safe for the population,” says Mr. Fulker.
In addition, it should be noted that two people were reportedly taken to the hospital. No firefighters were injured during the intervention.
Prevention
Éric Fulker recalls that it is important for citizens to have propane detectors installed inside residences to prevent similar situations from happening again. “It’s the best way to make sure our facility is safe.”
