6am News – 2024 Legislative Elections: Why Laurent Wauquiez is Opposed to a Government Coalition

After three days of silence, Emmanuel Macron addressed the French in a letter published this Wednesday in the regional press. According to him, no one won Sunday in the second round of the legislative elections: he calls for a broad rally to “build a solid, plural majority, around republican values”. Understand: without the RN or France Insoumise.

So is the right ready for a coalition with the Macronists and the left? “We will not participate in a government coalition”: a rejection for Laurent Wauquiez, the new leader of the La Droite Républicaine group (formerly LR) in the National Assembly.

One main reason is his strategy for 2027. He is thinking about the presidential election, and sees only one way to win it, according to one of his close friends: embodying the alternation. He doesn’t want to be damaged by powerHowever, he would only reach 5% of the vote if the presidential election were held today, according to a poll by Toluna-Harris Interactive for RTL.

His notoriety is low? “So much the better, we have everything to build,” replies one of his advisers. Already building a group to his liking, La Droite Républicaine, which would find a political space between Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron. Others covet this space: Gérald Darmanin and Éric Ciotti. The latter becomes a competitor of Wauquiez while it was he, Eric Ciotti, president of the Republicans, who was supposed to put it into orbit.
