The residents of the village of Torri del Benàco, with its approximately 3,000 inhabitants, are being admitted to the hospital in Peschiera del Garda in droves with similar symptoms. They all complain of severe gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, vomiting, cramps or fever. Because the authorities were concerned about such a large number of sick people, stool samples were taken and the norovirus was found. The source of this is currently being investigated.

Record high water level

One possible reason for the rapid spread, which has so far affected 200 to 300 people, could be the particularly high water level. Mayor Stefano Nicotra has warned against drinking water from the municipal network. The water from Lake Garda will be examined first. The viruses can spread through food or contaminated water. It could also be that the cause lies in one of the aqueducts that are part of the water supply, Nicotra writes in a Facebook post.

Not the first outbreak

The heavy rainfall in the region may also have affected the sewage systems of the neighboring communities, writes the Italian newspaper «Il Giornale»In April, norovirus outbreaks had already occurred in Lombardy and Trentino.
