Eddy Wauters died this morning at the age of 91. For more than 40 years he was chairman of football club Antwerp. Wauters also played there for years and came into action several times for the Red Devils. Until 2012 he was at the head of “his” club, but after a legal dispute he said goodbye in a minor.
Antwerp mourns for the loss of Eddy Wauters, the former chairman of the oldest football club in the country. The former banker died at the age of 91.
Wauters was one of the most controversial figures in the history of Antwerp FC and led the club for more than four decades.
In the 50s and 60s it all started for Eddy Wauters at Antwerp. He was first a player for 14 seasons, good for 234 matches.
-Wauters joined in 1969 as chairman of Antwerp FC and the club would lead the following 41 years. Under its reign, Antwerp had some sporting highlights, including the Belgian cup win in 1992 and the final of the European Cup II in 1993.
His presidency ended in 2012, when he was pushed aside by a change of power at Antwerp. Shortly thereafter a legal dispute between Wauters and the club followed. He still claimed to have millions too well, but the case turned out to be a conflict in which he was eventually convicted of repaying considerable sums.
In addition to his activities in the football world, Wauters also developed a career in the banking sector.
