Scandal in the parish in Dąbrowa Górnicza. The Vatican has decided

“On January 18, 2025, the Diocesan Curia received a letter from the Vatican Dicastery for the Clergy, in which the Holy See informed the Bishop of Sosnowiec that Tomasz Z. was punitively transferred to the secular state” – the spokesman for the Diocesan Curia in Sosnowiec, Fr. Przemysław Lech, told PAP

He added that in accordance with the provisions of canon law, the Diocesan Curia first informed Thomas Z himself about the decision of the Holy See. “We are currently passing on this information to the clergy, the faithful and everyone affected by this matter,” the spokesman added.

As he recalledall circumstances of the events will also be the subject of the work of the Commission “Explanation and Repair” of sensitive matters of the Diocese of Sosnowiecwhich was established on October 26, 2024 by the Bishop of Sosnowiec, Artur Ważny.

Tomasz Z. in August 2023 in his official apartment (next to the parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Angels in Dąbrowa Górnicza in the Sosnowiec diocese) organized a sexual encounter. Apart from the priest, two other men took part in it. The party got out of control.

One of the participants lost consciousness. Father Tomasz barricaded himself in the apartment and did not want to let in the rescuers called by the third man. He relented only after police intervention. It later came to light that the meeting participants took, among others, potency pills and drugs.

The host of the event at the rectory was a widely known and appreciated figure in the Church. He headed the diocesan edition of the Catholic weekly “Niedziela”, was the director of the Archives of the Sosnowiec Diocese, and appeared as a commentator on TVP.

After the scandal in the diocese, the Bishop of Sosnowiec, Grzegorz Kaszak, resigned. However, the 48-year-old priest Tomasz Z. was deprived of all church functions and expelled from the parish.

In April 2024, Tomasz Z. was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison. In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Tomasz Z. to pay PLN 15,000. PLN compensation to the injured party and to pay several thousand zlotys to the Victim Assistance and Post-penitentiary Assistance Fund.
