In a video posted on TikTok and spotted by BFMTV, Wednesday January 22, Emmanuel Macron spoke to two influencers who were fined after paying the bill for a contactless toll. The head of state defended payment by telephone on highways.
It is a controversy which has gone so far as to make Emmanuel Macron react. As spotted by BFMTV, Wednesday January 22, the President of the Republic reacted on TikTok to the dismay of two influencers, who received fines after paying the toll with Apple Pay and contactless and had several points withdrawn on their driving license, due to “using the phone while driving”. “You are not allowed to pay in Apple Pay with your phone, because it's 'use of the phone while driving'“, criticized the influencer “s4iint” in a video viewed more than five million times.
“You are right. I believe that in 2025 we should be able to pay at tolls with our phone. I passed the file to the Minister of the Interior (Bruno Retailleau) and we will collectively resolve this“, declared Emmanuel Macron in the video. Before adding: “Thanks for the alert“. The head of state's video generated nearly four million views and sparked numerous reactions, with some emphasizing the absurdity of this road measure.
A change to the Highway Code to come?
In its article R1412-6-1, the Highway Code clearly explains that “the use of a telephone held in the hand by the driver of a vehicle in circulation is prohibited“. It is on the basis of this article that the influencer Masdak, known for giving tips on scams, reacted: “At the toll, you are on a motorway, your vehicle is still considered roadworthy so you can receive a fixed fine of 135 euros and a withdrawal of three points from your driving license“. The Highway Code could therefore be slightly modified in the coming months.
