Girona leave the San Siro with the pride of having competed on equal terms against one of the most in-form opponents in the Champions League and in a historic setting. Míchel’s men were subdued at the start, but little by little they got the ball and ended the first half with three clear chances to tie the score. In the second half the pace was not as frenetic, but they kept trying and never lost the game against a Milan team that has five consecutive victories in the competition. Bryan Gil, in fact, scored a great goal, but it was disallowed for a millimetric offside.
The Italians started with some dangerous chances and Theo Hernandez had the clearest one, hitting the crossbar. Musah also hit the post, and in a recovery in the middle of the field, the Italians built a vertical attack that ended with the goal of Rafael Leao, who with great quality inside the area cut twice and beat Gazzaniga. From this point on, Girona took the lead and only the good role of goalkeeper Maignan separated them from the tie. Van de Beek had the first chance, cutting back and shooting inside the box, Tsygankov also came very close and Yangel Herrera was again on target on the verge of the break. In fact, Míchel’s men went into halftime dominating possession (53%), and enjoying their best minutes of the match.
A large number of Girona fans did not want to miss the historic duel in San Siro, and have accompanied the team in a multitudinous way as they did in Paris in the premiere in the competition. A magical night to remember, despite the fact that the result was not the desired one, because of what it means for the club to be able to play this competition and compete at the highest level against the best teams in Europe.
