release date, casting, plot… All the info

In 2023, a phone that never rang kept millions of viewers in suspense. As soon as it was posted on Netflix, The Night Agent emerged as an unexpected phenomenon. This spy thriller, adapted from the eponymous book by Matthew Quirk, very anchored in the classic codes of the genre, managed to climb into the world's top 10 most viewed series on the platform. Two years later, the show returns with a second season, available this Thursday, January 23.

A ringtone that turns everything upside down

In its first chapter, The Night Agent plunged us into the basement of the White House, where Peter Sutherland, a young FBI agent, found himself responsible for monitoring an emergency telephone line, intended to alert in the event of a critical threat. His boring routine is turned upside down when he receives a call from a young woman, Rose Larkin, a former cybersecurity expert, who tells him that her guardians were murdered for mysterious reasons.

Determined to protect Rose, Peter finds himself embroiled in a major conspiracy, infiltrating the highest levels of the American government. Between chases and shenanigans to foil, a romance is born between the two protagonists, finally interrupted at the end of this first season, when Peter accepts a mission abroad.

A new conspiracy and new faces

This second season picks up after this transfer within the secret organization. Peter leaves the cozy corridors of Washington to plunge into the chaos of the field, this time in Thailand. Sent to Bangkok, he is responsible for identifying a mole within the CIA. Alongside him, new allies like Alice, a seasoned agent who serves as a mentor, help him navigate this high-risk mission.

The cast of this second part expands with the arrival of Snow (Pitch Perfect) in the role of Alice, as well as Amanda Warren (The Leftovers), Teddy Sears (The Flash) and Arienne Mandi (The L Word: Generation Q). Gabriel Basso unsurprisingly takes over the lead role, and Luciane Buchanan will also make her return as Rose Larkin. An intriguing return after his departure for Silicon Valley at the end of season 1.

A season 3 already in the pipeline

It is not known whether Netflix had actually considered making The Night Agent a true saga. Originally, the first season stood on its own, standing as a standalone work without clearly indicating a sequel. But faced with the incredible success of this thriller, the platform seems to have chosen to ride the wave. Result: an early renewal for a season 3, confirming that Peter Sutherland's story is not over.

Scheduled to be filmed between late 2024 and early 2025, this third season promises to push the international stakes even further, with filming locations such as Istanbul and New York. If the details of the plot still remain confidential, the creators assure that they want to continue to explore the gray areas of the characters while preserving the tension which made the success of the series.
