- On the 7th matchday of the league phase of the Champions League, Bayern Munich surprisingly had to admit defeat at Feyenoord.
- Real Madrid left nothing to be desired in their 5-1 win against Salzburg at home.
- YB loses to Celtic late due to an own goal, PSG turns a 0-2 into a 4-2 against Manchester City.
Feyenoord – Bayern Munich 3-0
Feyenoord Rotterdam caused the biggest surprise on Wednesday. The Dutch defeated Bayern Munich 3-0 and inflicted their third defeat of the current campaign. The Munich team had not lost in the Netherlands since 1999 and a 2-1 defeat at PSV (also in the premier class).
Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez secured a 2-0 half-time lead with a brace: he first benefited from the Bayern defenders’ carelessness after a long, high ball (21′). Then, after an unnecessary foul by Raphaël Guerreiro, he scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 (45th+9). The Portuguese had only come on 3 minutes earlier for the injured Alphonso Davies. Bayern dominated with 80 percent possession, but conceded another goal shortly before the end.
Real Madrid – Salzburg 5:1
There are definitely easier tasks to start the new year with. In the first competitive game after the winter break and the official debut of coach Thomas Letsch, Salzburg went straight to the Santiago Bernabeu. There wasn’t much to gain there for the struggling Austrians. After just 55 minutes, the score was 4-0 from the guests’ perspective. After all: 8 minutes after the 5th goal by Vinicius Junior (77th), Mads Bidstrup scored a consolation goal.
Sparta Prague – Inter Milan 0-1
Inter Milan celebrated their 5th CL victory in their 7th game away at Sparta Prague and remained clean for the 6th time. Goalie Yann Sommer had to intervene twice. Inter’s captain Lautaro Martinez made the difference after 12 minutes. The Argentine took a cross from defender Alessandro Bastoni straight to the far post. From an acute angle, the volley landed into the net via the floor and the bottom edge of the bar.
Milan – Girona 1:0
After two defeats at the start of the premier class, AC Milan achieved their fifth complete success with a mini-victory against Girona. After a dominant first half, the “Rossoneri” rewarded themselves with the lead in the 37th minute – Rafael Leao hammered the ball into the net to make it 1-0. This result remained the same until the end – also because one of Girona’s goals was disallowed for offside (58′).
-Arsenal – Dinamo Zagreb 3:0
The “Gunners” achieved a confident victory against Dinamo Zagreb. Declan Rice had already given the Londoners the lead in the second minute. Kai Havertz (66th) and Martin Odegaard (91st) made things even clearer in the second round. Arsenal, who will play in the last round in Girona, can therefore count on direct qualification for the round of 16.
RB Leipzig – Sporting Lisbon 2:1
RB Leipzig’s first win in this Champions League campaign is a fact. In the 7th round, Marco Rose’s previously pointless team, whose elimination has already been sealed, narrowly defeated Sporting Lisbon 2-1. Yussuf Poulsen scored the winning goal just three minutes after Viktor Gyökeres’ equalizer (75′).
Shakhtar Donetsk – Brest 2-0
Shakhtar Donetsk maintained their slim chances of progressing in the Champions League with a win over Brest. The Ukrainians, who play their home games in Gelsenkirchen, celebrated a 2-0 victory in the game led by Swiss Sandro Schärer thanks to goals from Kevin Macedo (18th) and Georgiy Sudakov (37th). Edimilson Fernandes played well for the French, who had performed very convincingly in Europe so far.
