KASPER SCHMEICHEL is focused on more success at Celtic after signing a contract extension until the summer of 2026.
The 38-year-old Danish international keeper initially agreed a one-season deal when he arrived at Parkhead as a free agent after leaving Anderlecht, but has now taken up the 12-month option.
Schmeichel spent just one term at the Belgian club after an identical period at Ligue 1 Nice, but he did not hesitate in putting pen to paper to keep him in Glasgow for another year, at least.
The legendary netminder, who teamed up again with his former Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers in the summer, said: “I am really happy to extend my contract with the club.
HAMPDEN HERO…Kasper Schmeichel holds aloft the Premier Sports League Cup.
“I have had a great welcome and have loved every minute so far at Celtic and I am really looking forward to the next period at such a great football club.
“We have already enjoyed success this season and everyone at the club is focused on delivering more.
“It has been great to be working again with the gaffer and to be part of such a brilliant dressing room, and I wanted to be a part of this going forward.
“As ever, we are all really together and fully focused on bringing our fans as much success as we can.”
-Hoops boss Rodgers, talking to the club website, added: “I am really pleased that Kasper will be staying with us. He has already made a great impact on the club, on and off the pitch, and his quality and experience been crucial for us.
“Clearly, we knew that we were signing a top keeper last year, but he has really delivered for the club already and I know he will continue to do so.
YOU’RE MY No.1…Brendan Rodgers with Kasper Schmeichel.
“I know how much he loves being part of such a great club, and as one of our real leaders he will be a massive part of what we are hoping to achieve as we go forward.”
Schmeichel has been an ever-present for the Hoops and has played in all 34 games so far this season and will be in charge again when Celtic face Switzerland’s Young Boys in the Champions League qualifier at Parkhead tonight.
The Great Dane won his first piece of silverware with the club last month after making a dramatic penalty-kick save from Rangers’ Ridvan Yilmaz in the spot-kick shoot-out as Rodgers’ men lifted the Premier Sports League Cup after the 3-3 extra-time draw.
