Joshua Kimmich is in his final year of contract with FC Bayern. Oliver Kahn explains why FCB does not have a good negotiating position.

Munich – Im Sport1Kahn dealt a one-two against those responsible at FC Bayern and made it clear: “If you let a player enter his final year, he has all the cards in his own hands and all the opportunities to lead you as a club through the ring. Basically, it is important to prevent such situations. Kimmich thinks a lot about the overall picture.”

The Bayern star now has the opportunity to speak to other clubs and would certainly be in great demand as a free transfer top star next summer. The former CEO of FC Bayern further explained that the club started talks about an extension with Kimmich much too late: “Actually, you start talking to a top player two years before the end of the contract.”

Kahn: “Every player is replaceable”

Nevertheless, the 55-year-old also sees that there is always a replacement on the market for every player. He demonstrated this using the example of Robert Lewandowski, who went to FC Barcelona in 2022, while a year later Harry Kane replaced the Pole: “You can replace anyone in football. That’s also the right mindset you have to have: every player is replaceable at an absolute top club.”

While Kahn is more pessimistic about the situation surrounding Kimmich, sports director Max Eberl has high hopes of continuing to tie the midfielder to the record champions and is hoping for progress over Christmas. Eberl also has a lot of work to do with other personnel such as Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané. A total of six contracts are expiring.

When asked about the current situation, the 51-year-old explained: “The discussions have been very clear so far. Our position is clear. I hope the players think about it in their days off. We can’t promise anything, but we can show the players what we stand for and where we want to go. Of course it’s about trust.”
