Salamanca forced to play against despite gastroenteritis epidemic

The Spanish training the day before the match was canceled due to lack of players. According to the club, “since last Sunday, several members of the squad and staff began to suffer from gastrointestinal problems of undetermined origin (very frequent vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea and general malaise).” In total, “Eight first-team players and five staff members” suffer from these problems.”

Tango Basket refused to postpone the match because another championship match against is scheduled for this Saturday. Sports director Elodie Godin explains in Le Berry:

“Yes because everything is planned and we were only warned this morning (yesterday). If we had been warned in advance, perhaps it would have been different. But what can I say? My team traveled, we left as soon as Monday evening, we slept in , having been warned in advance, we could perhaps have organized differently. Apparently, they have been ill since Sunday.

The Spanish club explained in a press release that FIBA regulations do not require Bourges to grant its request to postpone the match.

As there are no specific regulations in this area – except in cases of force majeure – which provide for these cases of cancellation of matches due to injury or illness, it is the clubs who must come to an agreement. Bourges Basket refused the two options proposed by Avenida: playing on Thursday or playing on Friday or Saturday, postponing the championship matches and having the Salamanca team cover all travel and accommodation costs linked to both movements. Bourges alleges the impossibility of the calendar and the modification of the day of the French championship, and they have the right not to modify the date of our match if they deem it appropriate. Also, Perfumerías Avenida had to urgently register four young players (who join Paula Oliva already registered) to be able to participate in tomorrow's match, while waiting to be able to recover one (or more) of the eight players currently affected by these gastrointestinal problems for the shock even if, logically, they will not arrive in the best conditions.”

At the end of this Wednesday morning, Bourges Basket reacted in turn:

The Spanish club requested a postponement of the match due to cases of illness affecting several However, we had to refuse this request for several organizational and calendar reasons. The request for postponement reached us late, only the day before the match, once the players and staff arrived in Spain. our national calendar imposes strict constraints. A championship match against Tarbes is already scheduled for this Saturday and broadcast on “Sport en ”, and any modification would have led to logistical and sporting complications. We therefore made the decision to respect the program initially. foreseen.

Perfumerías Avenida has communicated that no FIBA regulations require us to grant their request for postponement, except in cases of force majeure. We made this decision taking into account our commitments and obligations towards our players, our partners and our supporters. We understand the difficulty faced by our adversary, and we wish them a speedy recovery. We remain focused on our sporting objectives and ready to offer a great performance to our supporters.
