YB in Champions League: Cedric Itten before the duel with Glasgow Rangers

“It was a nice experience for me because we won the majority of the games,” says Cedric Itten with a smile when he talks to him about the importance of the Glasgow city derby for 20 minutes. The YB striker played for Glasgow Rangers before moving to Bern. Now he and the Swiss champions will face Rangers rivals Celtic on Wednesday.

“The Old Firm is always something special, the whole city revolves around this game,” says Itten about the duels against Celtic as a Rangers player, both of which he won in two short appearances. He adds meaningfully: “If you lose there, you’d better stay at home for a few days.”

Numerous YB fans will not be staying at home on Wednesday, as they will support their favorites on site despite the fact that they are already out of the Champions League. Itten has a tip for Bern fans: “There are pubs for Rangers fans and pubs for Celtic fans, maybe they’d be better off going to one of the Rangers.”

The 28-year-old didn’t have many pub visits during his time in Scotland between 2020 and 2022, in addition to the tight schedule and also because of the corona pandemic. Itten also failed to get his big breakthrough at the traditional club. After all, he was able to celebrate the Scottish championship title in 2021 under coach Steven Gerrard and make contacts that still last today.

“I still write regularly with Ianis Hagi and James Tavernier from the Rangers,” reveals Itten. When it became clear during the draw that YB would meet Celtic, he received a lot of messages. “Everyone said we should definitely win this game. Of course I feel the same way,” explains the YB striker before the showdown at Celtic Park.

Celtic are currently 13 points ahead of Rangers in the domestic league. In contrast to the Bernese team, the Green and Whites can still progress in the premier class with nine points from six games. “The Scottish league is more physical and athletic,” says Itten, explaining the differences to the Super League. With the ball, the Swiss league is more likely to have the edge, said the attacker, who wants to shoot YB to its first victory in the Champions League under Giorgio Contini.
