The National Weather Service reported that several inches of snow could fall through 7 a.m. Friday as a result of a snow storm moving into the area.
South Hampton Roads could get about 3 inches while areas of the Outer Banks could get as much as 6 inches, according to the most recent snow totals map released by the weather service. On the Peninsula, which received more snow with the past two storms, will get a break. Williamsburg is expected to get less than an inch, and Newport News and Hampton could get about 1 inch.
A winter storm warning has been put into effect starting at 5 p.m.
Bitter cold is expected for the rest of the week as well. Daily highs will be in the 20s through Wednesday, with early morning lows in the single digits to mid-teens. Residents are encouraged to prepare for minimum wind chills to be as low as 5 degrees at night through Wednesday night and early Thursday.
The storm moved through Texas and Louisiana on Tuesday, bringing several inches to cities across the Gulf. Nearly 2,000 flights to, from or within the U.S. were canceled Tuesday, with about 10,000 others delayed, according to reporting from the Associated Press.
Across Hampton Roads, cities have begun cancelling and delaying certain services and events. A list of those closures can be found here.
