Weather Update – Wednesday 1/22/2025 – CCN

Greetings, folks. ????

Our weather blog is brought to you by our friends at Freedom Insurance. Did you know that Freedom Insurance can write life insurance policies? If you’re in need of life insurance, or any other policy, give the experts at Freedom a call today, 910-640-2828.

Wow.  It has been many years since we’ve had a snowstorm of 6 inches or more.  Welcome to the Winter Wonderland.

It takes a *PERFECT* set of circumstances for us to get a true classic snowstorm here.

And we got it. Did we ever.  The variables that I had been mentioning for a week all fell into place.  The moisture and the forcing (isentropic lift) arrived simultaneously.  A deformation band became established essentially right overhead, extending southward through Georgetown.  The Arctic high was just far enough to the west that the moisture was able to push father inland.  The warm air aloft stayed well offshore.  For snow lovers, this is just absolutely perfect.

Enjoy it, enjoy the day off (just about everything is closed), stay warm, and stay safe. You have my permission to act like a young child today. Have the snowball fight, build the snowman, enjoy something that is rather rare.  It might be many years before we see something like this again.

From my front porch at about 11:45 PM last evening…

Now that our storm is pulling away the big story is the ridiculously cold temperatures that will continue through Thursday. We’re not getting above freezing todayso there won’t be much melting. And with the deep snow pack in place, we are going down, down, down tonight. How low will we go? Upper single digits to lower teens. I’m not kidding. This is dangerous cold.

Any melting that occurs today (well, it won’t be much), will re-freeze HARD tonight. It’s almost safe to say that travel tonight will be just as hazardous and dangerous as it was during the snowstorm, if not even more so. Therefore, if you have to travel, please give yourself a LOT of extra time to get where you’re going. Go slow, get there alive.

I had been watching a threat for some freezing rain or some kind of wintry precip on Thursday. I think the dry high pressure to our west will win the battle for that one. The dry air will keep the light precipitation closer to the coast. So if you’re headed to Southport or Wilmington or Jacksonville on Thursday, watch out for some light freezing rain. Otherwise, here in Columbus County, I think we’ll see a mix of clouds and sunshine. We should finally get back above freezing Thursday afternoon… but we won’t be above freezing for long, certainly not long enough for any real melting. Once again Thursday night we drop to about 20, so everything re-freezes again.

We go above freezing for real on Friday as high pressure moves virtually overhead. Mostly sunny with highs in the mid 40s on Friday. We drop back to the upper teens Friday night, so AGAIN, re-freezing is possible.

For the weekend, dry weather with warming temps… the snow will likely be gone by Sunday as we jump well into the 50s and stay above freezing overnight. Our next storm system approaches on Monday with rain chances.

Here’s your forecast. Thanks for reading, thanks for supporting my sponsor, enjoy the snow, and take care.
