Baton Rouge LA area school closures continuing Wednesday | Weather/Traffic

Thanks to the snow that has blanketed southeast Louisiana, schools across the Baton Rouge area, with almost no exceptions, are likely staying closed through Thursday.

Temperatures are forecast to rise above freezing only briefly Wednesday afternoon.

K-12 schools, as well as colleges and universities, began their closure announcements several days ahead of the wintry weather. Many initially had plans to close only on Tuesday, but soon expanded that to Wednesday. By Monday afternoon, almost every school in the Baton Rouge region had thrown in the towel for both days.

Ascension Parish public schools was the first district to extend their closure yet again, through Thursday.

“This decision aligns with closures announced by Ascension Parish Government, the City of Donaldsonville, and the City of Gonzales, as snow and ice will continue to create hazardous travel conditions,” according to the announcement, issued Tuesday afternoon.

Iberville Parish public schools joined Ascension soon after.

Baton Rouge Community College and Southern University are also staying closed through Thursday, though classes will continue virtually.

Many K-12 schools are continuing with limited schooling virtually, most often in the form of take-home print work or do-on-your-own lessons posted online.

Public school closure announcements prompted charter and private schools to do the same. For instance, parochial schools in Diocese of Baton Rouge all closed up shop for both Tuesday and Wednesday. The diocese’s practice is to follow the closing decisions of the public school districts they are situated in unless otherwise noted. Current Catholic school closures are being posted online at diobr.org/news.
