“Burn the blood”: Nicolas Duvauchelle thirsty for revenge

Tristan, a young man from the Georgian community, lives in with his parents in a small apartment in a working-class neighborhood. His mother gives piano lessons, his father is a driver for a Russian oligarch, and he is destined to become an Orthodox priest. But after his father is killed by thugs, who mistake him for his boss, his big brother Gabriel suddenly arrives, violent and impulsive, thirsty for revenge…

Akaki Popkhadze, the young Franco-Georgian director, who also co-wrote the screenplay, explained that this first film contained many autobiographical elements. He himself, like his character Tristan, arrived in our country as a child without speaking a word of French. The action takes place in Nice neighborhoods that are much less glamorous than those we usually see on the big screen.

Likewise, if the Georgian mafia has often appeared in the cinema or in series, “Bûle le sang” has the merit of showing that these criminals cannot represent a community that we discover here through the daily life of some of its members. representatives.

For the purposes of the story, the two main actors, Nicolas Duvauchelle, who plays Gabriel, and Florent Hill, in the role of Tristan, and also co-writer of the film, learned a few words of Georgian. And above all they are very convincing. The first as the prodigal son, once forced to return home after having descended into delinquency and brought shame on his family, now only driven by his desire for revenge. The second like his little brother, much calmer and thoughtful, much more mature than his elder. Some pretty supporting roles complete the cast, such as the astonishing Denis Lavant as the godfather of the local underworld, or the unleashed Finnegan Oldfield as the little thug, cocaine to the depths of his nostrils.

The plot does not multiply the action scenes, but still offers some nice adrenaline rushes, including a long sequence facing Bulgarian traffickers that is rather well cut. One regret, however: the entire feature film is filmed with a “fisheye” lens, which rounds the sides of the image, which becomes boring…
