Defeated at Anfield (2-1) by Liverpool, LOSC is still one of the first eleven clubs already qualified for the rest of the Champions League.
Far from its bases, in England, LOSC fought valiantly during its opposition with Liverpool this Tuesday. The Mastiffs, undefeated for 21 matches in all competitions, were however forced to lose (2-1), manhandled throughout the match by the Reds, undisputed leaders in both the Premier League and the Champions League. Trailing following Mohamed Salah's opener (34'), they still managed to equalize through Jonathan David (62') despite the early exclusion of Aïssa Mandi (59'). But a shot deflected by Ngal'ayel Mukau ultimately benefited Harvey Elliott (67') for the winning goal. The Lille team was not unworthy, but fell on a bone at Anfield.
This Tuesday, January 21, the first half of the seventh and penultimate day of the league phase of the Champions League was rich in lessons, particularly accounting. At the end of the evening, eleven clubs are already guaranteed to be qualified for the rest of the competition, even without having played. This is for example the case of Stade Brestois, among the three French clubs already guaranteed to be play-off players.
Among these eleven clubs, two of them already know that they will play in the round of 16. These are Liverpool (21 points out of 21 possible) and FC Barcelona (18 pts). Falling Aston Villa (1-0) at the Stade Louis-II, AS Monaco also validated its ticket for, at least, the play-offs. It was the same for the Mastiffs, even with the defeat conceded in the evening at Anfield. In the opposite direction, six teams are already eliminated (Bologna, Red Star Belgrade, Sturm Graz, Leipzig, Slovan Bratislava, Young Boys).
