Yesterday, Monday, two French investigating judges issued a new arrest warrant against the ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to Agence -Presse, citing a source it described as close to the file.

This is the second arrest warrant issued by French judges from the Crimes Against Humanity Section of the Court against Bashar al-Assad, and its issuance came after an additional request from the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecution, according to the same source.

Based on the evidence of the investigation, the prosecution considers that Bashar al-Assad no longer enjoys – after his overthrow and leaving his position as president – personal immunity that might protect him from any prosecution before foreign courts, based on the requirements of international law.

This memorandum was issued after investigations showed that Salah Abu Nabout, a 59-year-old French-Syrian citizen and former French language professor, was killed on June 7, 2017 as a result of the bombing of his house by Syrian army helicopters.

French justice considers that Bashar al-Assad ordered and provided the means to carry out this attack in Daraa, southwestern Syria, according to the source close to the file who spoke to Agence France-Presse.

As part of this investigation, which has been open since 2018, 6 senior Syrian military figures are targeted for arrest warrants being issued against them on charges of involvement in committing war crimes.

In a statement, Omar – who is the son of Salah Abu Nabout – said, “This case represents the culmination of a long struggle for justice, which my family and I have believed in from the beginning,” expressing his hope that “a trial will be held and the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to justice, wherever they are.” “.

In November 2023, a first arrest warrant was issued against Bashar al-Assad due to chemical attacks using sarin gas, which his regime was accused of carrying out on August 5 in Adra and Douma, north of Damascus, in which about 450 people were injured, and also on August 21, 2013 in Ghouta. Al-Sharqiya, also north of Damascus, where more than a thousand people were killed, according to American sources.
