Who Are Lorenzo Sonego’s Parents Giorgio and Federica? All You Need to Know About His Family

Lorenzo Sonego, 29, is making heads turn at the 2025 Australian Open. On Monday, he became only the sixth Italian player ever to enter the QF round of the Melbourne Major. In his fourth round match, Sonego beat a promising American talent, 19-year-old Learner Tien – who had previously ousted last year’s finalist Daniil Medvedev – with a score line of 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at the John Cain Arena. It appears Sonego is clearly going through a ‘Happy Slam’ experience at the moment. While he’s now earned huge recognition, due to his remarkable singles campaign, not many are aware of the World No.55’s background, especially his family.

Lorenzo was born in the year 1995 in Turin to his father Giorgio and mother Federica Sonego. Giorgio initially acted as the biggest influence for him to take up tennis. In his childhood, Sonego used to play mostly soccer. From age six to thirteen, he played for Torino FC youth academy. However, when he was 11, he began playing tennis under the supervision of Giorgio and his first coach Gipo Arbino. The latter remained his trainer from 2006 to 2024. Sonego also has a sister, named Francesca.

After turning pro in 2013, Sonego won his first ATP title in 2019 at Antalya. Then in 2020, he got his first big moment of recognition when he beat 24-time Grand Slam winner and former World No.1 Novak Djokovic at the Vienna Open. They met in the QF round where the Italian edged him out with a score line of  6–2, 6–1. A year later, the ATP pro gained his career-best ranking of 21, in October 2021. He even contributed to Italy’s 2023 Davis Cup triumph as a crucial team member.

Coming into the first Major of the season down under this year, hardly anyone took notice of him until he beat future star, Brazil’s 18-year-old Joao Fonseca. In the second round encounter, the Italian overcame Fonsesca in a five-set thriller. He eventually advanced further with a score line of 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. But the chatter around his name increased even more when he defeated Learner Tien on Monday. However, the journey has just begun for the 29-year-old. His next opponent will surely test him to his limits.

Lorenzo Sonego to face Ben Shelton in Australian Open quarterfinal round

On Monday, young American star Ben Shelton got his entry into the QF round after Gael Monfils retired from his match with the 22-year-old. The score was in favor of Shelton, at 7-6(3), 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 1-0 before Monfils decided to withdraw due to his back injury. After the match, Shelton praised the Frenchman and said, “Gael is a guy that I’ve watched since a little kid. He has the greatest highlight tape of all time, and you saw some of that tonight,” as reported by Australian Open website on January 20.
