At 36 years old, Karel has a very impressive track record in ultra-running. He completed the Barkley Marathons in 2023, becoming just the 17th person to conquer the infamous race. In 2016, he tackled the 4,300km Pacific Crest Trail in just 52 days and smashed the record for the Appalachian Trail in 2018 with a time of 41 days—records previously held by Joe McConaughy. In 2020, he became the Big’s Backyard Ultra World Championrunning 75 laps for a total of 502km and he’s even had a punt at the iconic Speights Coast to Coast.
Today, at 6 days and 7 hoursKarel had covered an impressive 629km as he passed near Auckland Airport. Reaching out for a friendly handshake, he greeted us warmly before continuing south.
Now, Karel continues his journey through 3,006km of mountain trails, beaches, and roadsaiming to reach Bluff (while avoiding any feral dogs like they encountered on day 4).
