No. 23 Wrestling Takes on Arizona State Wednesday

COLUMBIA, MO. – No. 23 Missouri wrestling welcomes Arizona State to Columbia on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The match inside Hearnes Center will be streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Coming out on top, Missouri defeated Utah Valley, Jan. 17, at home 18-16.
  • The Tigers started the dual with decision wins from their first five wrestlers: Gage Walker (125), Jake Crapps (133), Josh Edmond (141), Zeke Seltzer (149) and James Conway (157).
  • The Wolverines stormed back, taking the next four matches 1 65-197, including a fall and a major decision.
  • Coming down to heavyweight, Jarrett Stoner got the 5-1 decision and sealed the match for Mizzou, 18-16.
  • Additionally, Tiger Style’s lineup against Utah Valley included three true freshmen (Gage Walker, Jake Crapps and Logan Cole).

CRAPPS STEPS UP

  • Jake Crapps was the fifth true freshman to see action in a dual this season, taking on Utah Valley’s Kase Mauger, Jan. 17.
  • Filling in for Kade Moore at 133 pounds, Crapps earned two takedowns and a reversal in a 9-2 win over Mauger. The freshman is 10-5 in attached competitions this season, including four bonus-point victories.

CYCLONE OPEN

  • Missouri took on the Cyclone Open on Jan. 19, securing 10 podium finishes.
  • Redshirt sophomore Cam Steed took the top spot at 165 points with a fall and technical fall on his way to the final.
  • Redshirt freshman Jarrett Stoner finished as the 285 runner up after defeating No. 19 Juan Mora of Oklahoma in the semifinals.
  • Both redshirt sophomore Owen Uhls (141) and redshirt junior Seth Nitzel (285) claimed third place at the tournament.
  • Others on the podium include: Mack Mauger (5th-125), Jake Crapps (6th-133), Kade Moore (5th-133), Easton Hilton (5th-141), Nate Pulliam (5th-149) and James Coway (5th-157).

VALUABLE VETERANS

  • Most recently, Tiger Style was forced to announce it will be without 184-pound starter and two-time NCAA qualifier Colton Hawks for the time being.
  • Head coach Brian Smith announced that senior Rocky Elamwho has been combating multiple injuries, will not wrestle this season on Jan. 2
  • Additionally, classmate Keegan O’Toole has been battling an injury sustained earlier in the season and will miss the month of January to allow him to recover as much as possible. Smith remains optimistic O’Toole will be ready for the postseason.
  • Elam, O’Toole and Hawks join senior Noah Surtin as missing starters from the projected 2024-25 lineup, as he announced his medical retirement on Dec. 13, 2024.
  • With their absence, the lineup is missing four wrestlers who have totaled 279 career wins and 152 bonus-point victories.

RANKINGS REPORT

  • The Black and Gold are ranked No. 23 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Poll.
  • Mizzou has six of 10 wrestlers ranked by InterMat and FloWrestling.
  • Keegan O’Toole comes in at No. 3 on FloWrestling’s pound-for-pound list and maintains his No. 1 ranking at 174 pounds.
  • Jarrett Stoner is the newest Tiger to be ranked, coming in at No. 29 by FloWrestling at 285 pounds.

THE SERIES: ARIZONA STATE

  • Wednesday’s dual will mark the 10th meeting between Missouri and Arizona State, with the Sun Devils holding the advantage, 5-3-1.
  • The first match came during the 1988-89 season (34-9, ASU) with Wes Roper at the helm.
  • Head Coach Brian Smith is 3-4-1 against the Sun Devils in his career.

HOMESTAND

  • After wrestling on the road for the first half of the season, the Tigers enter a homestand, competing five times in Columbia in January.
  • Missouri took on No. 12 Cornell (Jan. 3), No. 15 Stanford (Jan. 12) and Utah Valley (Jan. 17), and closes  with Arizona State (Jan. 22) and No. 20 West Virginia (Jan. 26).
