Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said he was pleased with his team’s performance in the victory against Wolverhampton, after which they ended a five-game winless streak in the Premier League.
“We were superb for the first 40 minutes. The game was very good, we completely dominated the game, scored goals, created chances. Then the last five minutes of the first half happened, what has happened to us many times in the last four or five games. We lost a bit of confidence, conceded a goal and struggled,” Mareska said, as reported by Sky.
Chelsea defeated Wolverhampton 3-1 at home last night and climbed to fourth place in the Premier League table.
“We started the second half quite well and after the second and third goals, the game was under control. Overall, I think the game was good. We are happy that we won. And from Tuesday we will start thinking about Manchester City, which will certainly be a difficult game. In the last five games we have created many chances but we did not take them, now we have scored three goals,” said Mareska.
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Vitor Pereira has criticised player Mateus Cunha for his poor “body language” during the match.
“He’s the captain. He can be frustrated because he wants to win, but everyone in the locker room wants to win. I don’t like his body language. I understand now, but next time I won’t understand,” he stated.
Pereira added that his team needs to have more confidence.
-“We played against a strong team with players who can create chances. We didn’t start the way I wanted, we defended too much and had problems with passing the ball into the penalty area. We changed wings, I think it was a good decision. When we were compact, we started to play and cause them problems. We scored a goal, but the second half didn’t start well,” he said.
“At times we played with confidence, and at other times we lost it and that’s something we need to change,” added Pereira.
Chelsea climbed to fourth place in the table with 40 points, 10 points behind and a game in hand over leaders Liverpool.
After their third consecutive defeat, Wolverhampton are 17th in the table with 16 points, the same number as Ipswich, who are first in the relegation zone, in 18th place.
