From roadside restaurant management in Bolu to the top of Kartalkaya, Mazhar Murtezaoğlu’s rise step by step

Mazhar Murtezaoğlu was born in Rize and received a forest engineer diploma. He was on duty in Bolu in the 1960s. The Bolu Mountain Road, which connects Ankara and Istanbul, was a challenge for passengers, especially during the winter months. The rest stops along the way were also famous.

BOLU MOUNTAIN STARTED IN TRADE WITH ITS CANTINE

Mazhar Murtezaoğlu established a restaurant called Bolu Dağı Kantini in Varan Facilities on the roadside. He also sold local products here. Mazhar Murtezaoğlu’s Bolu Mountain Canteen increased its branches over time.

FIRST HOTEL ON THE ROADSIDE

Mazhar Murtezaoğlu was thinking of a hotel project on Bolu Mountain Road where passersby would stay. When road conditions were bad, passengers could stay and taste local delicacies. He had the Koru Hotel built. Things went much better than he expected. Koru Hotel was filled with customers. In fact, there were not only passersby, but also those who came specifically for the hotel.

HE SET HIS EYES ON THE SUMMIT OF KÖROĞLU MOUNTAINS

Mazhar Murtezaoğlu discovered the tourism potential in Bolu and got very comfortable with the job. In 1974, when he put forward the project of a ski hotel at the top of the Köroğlu Mountains, everyone was happy for him. “This guy is crazy” he said. Because the only thing at the top of the mountain was snow. There was no electricity, roads or water and it seemed impossible to bring it.

HE DID NOT LIKE ULUDAĞ, HE IMITATED AUSTRIA

Mazhar Murtezaoğlu first went to Uludağ and examined the hotels. However, it did not fit his own project. Then he took his wife and children and went to Austria. He stayed in hotels here. He took photos of the hotels he liked and talked to the managers.

GAVE CHILDREN TO TAKE SKI LESSONS

He also took his children ski lessons in Austria. After all, he was going to have a ski hotel built. He started the construction of the hotel as soon as he returned to Turkey. Kartal Hotel opened its doors in 1978. His wife Güner Mürtezaoğlu sewed the tablecloths. Their children were standing at the reception.

I’M TURNING OFF THE GENERATOR, EVERYONE IS ASLEEP

Mazhar Murtezaoğlu crushes the tracks himself with his track machine, “My customer cannot be stranded!” He opened the mountain road himself. The hotel’s electricity was provided by a generator. Mazhar Murtezaoğlu, from time to time, asks his customers, “I turn off the generator, everyone goes to sleep” He would even send them to their rooms saying: He even kicked snowboarders off the track because they were disturbing the skiers. However, those staying at Mazhar Murtezaoğlu’s hotel were like members of a family.

After the Kartal Hotel, its annex building and then the Grand Kartal Hotel were built. The name of the ski resort was Kartalkaya, referring to Mazhar Murtezaoğlu’s hotels named Kartal. When Mazhar Murtezaoğlu passed away in 2019, the management of the hotels was left to his two children.
