Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration, describing it as a “day of change and also a day of hope for the resolution of many problems”, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“He is a strong person,” Zelenskyy said of Trump in Kyiv on Monday. “Ukrainians are ready to work together with Americans to achieve peace, true peace. This is an opportunity that must be seized.”
During his campaign, Trump implausibly pledged to end the war within 24 hours even before taking office, though he has yet to outline a plan. His special envoy for the conflict, Keith Kellogg, last week said he hoped a resolution would come within the next 100 days.
-Zelenskyy has emphasised Ukraine seeks an end to the war but insisted lasting peace may only be achieved from a position of strength, backed by security guarantees from western allies, particularly Nato.
