Psychologists dismiss “Blue Monday” as a myth, warn against dangerous excuses

The term was coined in 2005 by British travel company consultant Cliff Arnal, purely for marketing purposes. Yet many people, according to Magdalena Nowicka of Poland’s SWPS University, still use “Blue Monday” to justify feeling down.

“This is a dangerous trend,” she says, noting it can undermine genuine mental health concerns and push some toward impulsive purchases to boost their mood.

In contrast, professionals say the seasonal affective disorder (SAD)—colloquially known as “seasonal depression”—is scientifically recognized. Affecting individuals during autumn and winter, SAD involves mood disruptions linked to reduced daylight hours.

Psychologists emphasize that anyone experiencing persistent sadness or low energy, regardless of the time of year, should seek professional guidance rather than rely on viral “Blue Monday” claims.
