Cold air settles in, wintry precipitation possible Tuesday night

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Today through Thursday are all First Alert Weather Days as cold air and a chance for wintry precipitation are in the forecast.

Our MLK Day is starting out much colder than yesterday with lows below freezing for areas away from the coastline. Wind chills will be in the 20s through our morning commute, as a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until Noon on Wednesday.

If you are attending the MLK Day parade in Savannah, bundle up! Temperatures will be in the 30s throughout the parade with wind chills in the 20s until about 10AM. Highs will only be in the low to mid 40s under mostly sunny skies.

Tuesday morning will be even colder with lows below freezing away from the coast along with wind chills in the teens during the morning commute. There is a low-end chance at freezing rain Tuesday morning along the coast, but that is not a big concern at this time. Highs will be in the lower 40s followed by the chance of wintry precipitation late Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

A Winter Storm Watch will be in effect from 5PM Tuesday through Noon on Wednesday.

This is the timeframe for the worst travel conditions. Wintry precipitation will continue overnight Tuesday into the morning commute on Wednesday, clear from west to east. Inland communities have the best chance at seeing snowfall, with a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain possible near the coast. Models are inconsistent on accumulations, with one inch of snow possible near the coast and 2-3 inches possible for inland areas. Coastal communities could also see 0.25″ of ice accumulation, which would be a big impact on roads and especially bridges.

Moisture moves out Wednesday morning with highs only reaching the mid to upper 30s Wednesday afternoon. There is a low-end risk for freezing rain along the coast on Thursday morning, with lows in the 20s and wind chills in the teens. Even if we don’t see precipitation, we need to prepare for the extended cold weather!

Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be cold and dry with freezing temperatures in the morning when wind chills will be in the lower 20s. We will gradually warm this weekend, with highs in the lower 50s on Saturday and upper 50s on Sunday.

Stay tuned for updates and prepare for the cold. If we do experience wintry precipitation, don’t get on the roads unless you need too.
