The mayor of Lyon denounces a social network governed by the “law of the strongest” where the “fierceest communities” “reign supreme”.
“Goodbye X”. The environmentalist mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet announced this Monday, January 20, that he was leaving the social network X, where “the rules have changed” since the purchase of the platform by Elon Musk.
On the competing social network Bluesky, the elected official denounces “the law of the strongest” which governs daily violence” and “calls to hatred go unpunished”.
“The promise of direct, unhindered speech between citizens is no longer kept,” he concludes, assuring that X “is today an accepted instrument of destabilization, driven to weaken our democracies.”
“A tipping point for our democracies”
Grégory Doucet also mentions “Mark Zuckerberg's recent allegiance to the Trump-Musk method”, believing that this change of position “does not bode well” for the social networks that are Instagram and Facebook.
-“We are experiencing a tipping point for our democracies. In a short time, stories that seemed phantasmagorical to us are interfering in everyday discussions,” laments the elected official.
Faced with this situation, he calls on the European Union to legislate to “guarantee freedom of expression and protect the right to information”.
Like Grégory Doucet, many political figures and institutions have announced their departure from Elon Musk's social network, such as the environmentalist deputy Sandrine Rousseau, the mayor of Strasbourg Jeanne Barseghian, that of Paris Anne Hidalgo, or even the Grand Est region, and the AP-HP. Others plan to leave it from the inauguration of Donald Trump this Monday, January 20, like 80 associations and the city of Paris.
