French time, schedule, guests, speeches… how will Donald Trump's inauguration this Monday be organized?

Donald Trump will be inaugurated this Monday for a second term at the White House during a ceremony which will mark one of the most astonishing returns to politics in the history of the United States.

Although the“Inauguration Day” is traditionally devoted to celebrations with great fanfare, Donald Trump has already committed to signing a series of decrees that day on issues such as border security or oil and gas production.

When will the inauguration take place?

Donald Trump will take the oath of office at noon, or 6 p.m. in , in front of the Capitol in Washington. He will then deliver his inaugural speech, which he said would be inspiring and unifying. This would contrast with his speech at his inauguration in 2017, in which he promised to end “American carnage”.

Outgoing President Joe Biden has said he plans to attend the inauguration ceremony and the transfer of power, a courtesy Donald Trump did not extend to him four years ago. Thousands of people are expected on the National Mall esplanade, near the Washington Monument, to follow the ceremony on giant screens.

The guest list

Contrary to custom, Donald Trump invited several foreign leaders to the ceremony, which is generally attended by diplomats for security reasons. Argentine President Javier Milei, a staunch supporter of the president-elect, announced that he would travel to Washington. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, for his part, said he planned to attend the ceremony. Although he was invited, Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend. Chinese Vice President Han Zheng will be present.

One of the leaders of the German far-right AfD (Alternative for Germany) party, Tino Chrupalla, was invited to the inauguration ceremony. Big bosses of the technology sector such as Elon Musk (X, Tesla), close advisor to Donald Trump, Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and Mark Zuckerberg (Meta) will also be among the guests. Tiktok CEO Shou Zi Chew also plans to attend the ceremony, reports the New York Times. On the other hand, the boss of AI chip giant Nvidia, Jensen Huang, indicated that he would not go there.

As for the French guests, Donald Trump invited representatives of far-right movements, including Eric Zemmour and Sarah Knafo, from the Reconquête party, as well as Marion Maréchal.

A delegation of elected representatives from Patriots for Europe, the third force in the European Parliament, was also invited to the ceremony and will be present in Washington. The National Rally will be represented by Louis Aliot, Julien Sanchez and Alexandre Sabatou. French Ambassador Laurent Bili will attend the ceremony at the invitation of the White House.

An organized parade

After a lunch with members of Congress, Donald Trump will visit the White House. It will be followed by a procession made up, among others, of military regiments, school and high school orchestras, and groups of citizens. The new president and his guests will then watch the procession from a platform.

Decrees from day one

Two sources familiar with the matter said that Donald Trump was preparing around 100 executive orders and directives for the first day of his new term. Donald Trump should notably sign decrees giving more latitude to immigration agents to arrest migrants without criminal records, providing for military reinforcements at the border between the United States and Mexico, and relaunching construction of the border wall.

Decrees aimed at increasing energy production are also planned. Donald Trump should also begin granting pardons to people convicted of participating in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Who funds the festivities?

Inauguration galas are scheduled to be held Monday evening at various locations across Washington. Donald Trump could participate in some of them. Official events are funded by the Donald Trump Inauguration Committee.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com, and Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Meta Platforms, said they would each donate $1 million to the committee, as did Apple CEO Tim Cook and CEO Tim Cook. 'Open AI, Sam Altman. Uber and its CEO Dara Khosrowshahi have already contributed $1 million each to the fund.

Donald Trump's inauguration committee must fund all events except the inauguration ceremony at the Capitol, at the expense of taxpayers. In 2017, Donald Trump raised $106.6 million for his inauguration festivities. His committee raised more than $170 million this time, according to several media.
