On Monday, Iga Świątek faced a tennis player who got into the main draw of the Australian Open 2025 as a “lucky loser” from the qualifying rounds. Eva Lys (WTA 128) has already achieved her lifetime Grand Slam success. In 2022, the German was the Pole's rival in the second round of the WTA 500 indoor competition in Stuttgart and won two games. In Melbourne she only won a game.
The match started promisingly, as Lys scored two break points. However, she did not take advantage of any of these opportunities and the second-ranked player in the WTA ranking took the lead. And then it started! Świątek quickly found her rhythm. In the exchanges, the Pole was like a wall for the German. The representative of our western neighbors had to work hard to win a point. In the first set, she collected only 10 of them.
Lys had no arguments to surprise the five-time Grand Slam champion. Świątek led the exchanges very wisely, she didn't even have to be particularly aggressive on the return to gain the advantage.

Our tennis player quickly scored breaks in the second and fourth games. When the German made the winning return at 4-0, she received applause from the audience. It was her only winner in the entire set! After changing ends, the Pole used the second set point and closed the opening game with a score of 6-0 in just 24 minutes.
The second set did not end with a bagel. Świątek quickly gained a break and moved up to 3-0. However, Lys already scored more points than in the premiere, which is why she did not leave the Rod Laver Arena on a tennis “bicycle”. A few nicely finished balls allowed her to keep her serve in the fourth game. The German woman's feeling of relief was mixed with great joy.
Świątek kept playing her game and patiently waited for her next chances. She attacked on the return at 4:1. In the very long sixth game, Lys saved three break points, but in the fourth game she put her backhand into the net. Now the Pole didn't wait any longer and scored three match points. She immediately took advantage of the first opportunity and decided the duel.
-After just an hour of meeting, Świątek won 6:0, 6:1. On Monday, the tennis player from Raszyn had three aces, two double faults, 28 finishing strokes and 18 unforced errors. Lys only finished 7 balls and made 15 mistakes. The Pole scored a total of 59 out of 86 points played.
Seeded second, Świątek advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2025 Grand Slam without losing a set. Her opponent at this stage on Wednesday will be American Emma Navarro (WTA 8) or Russian Daria Kasatkina (WTA 10).
