UNITED STATES. The European far right and… Village People at Trump's inauguration ceremony

Seen from the United States, the stars of the inauguration ceremony will undoubtedly be the group Village People and their song Y.M.C.A.a refrain from the presidential candidate's meetings. Probably also the digital billionaires Elon Musk (Tesla), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Mark Zuckerberg (Meta) and Tim Cook (Apple).

But seen from Europe, it is Giorgia Meloni who captures the attention: the president of the Italian council of ministers was personally invited, breaking with a tradition which limits foreign representations to ambassadors. The only serving European leader present at Capitol Hill, she is “a fantastic woman who has conquered Europe,” according to Donald Trump, who received her in early January at his Mar-a-Lago residence. A woman closely linked to Elon Musk, displaying the ambition to be the crossing point between the European Union and the United States. As Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also hopes to be, who for his part declined the invitation.

Musk, the election agent

These two names sum up Trumpian preferences: right-wing, very right-wing, nationalist and anti-Brussels. This is the case of the former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, and the probable future Chancellor of Austria Herbert Kickl, invited but remained in Vienna for the formation of his government and delegating a deputy from his party.

But also from the president of the Alternative für Deutschland (AFD), Tino Chrupalla, convinced that “this presidency (Trump) will change the world forever” – and keen to thank Elon Musk who, one month before the elections, continues to promote this far-right party. They will find in Washington other figures of the “reactionary international” denounced by Emmanuel Macron, such as the Argentine President Javier Milei, or the British leader Nigel Farage – another protégé of Elon Musk.

first, too

France will be well represented, according to the same criteria. European MP Marion Maréchal, who intends to “import to France the model of a coalition of the right”, and the couple from Reconquête! Eric Zemmour and Sarah Knafo. This boasts in the JDD “the wind of freedom (which) blows over the West”, and an ideological convergence: “the defense of identity, the protection of our borders, the end of propaganda in schools […] and the rehabilitation of enrichment”.

And the National Rally? He will be represented at the Capitol by Louis Aliot, Julien Sanchez and Alexandre Sabatout. But if Marine Le Pen remained very discreet about her non-invitation, the president of the RN Jordan Bardella illustrated the nuances of the far right in the face of Trump. He pointed out the risks for France of “America first”, in particular for “our farmers and our wine growers” threatened with customs duties, and quipped: “We have the impression that it is Walt Disney and that it's the race to take a photo in front of Donald Trump during his inauguration speech. »
