TikTok experienced a turbulent day on Sunday, January 19, during which its existence on American soil floated between two waters. ByteDance, the parent company, made the decision to deactivate the platform overnight from Saturday to Sunday in order to comply with a law, signed in April 2024 by President Joe Biden, which requires it to sell TikTok to an American buyer. , under penalty of banishment. Fourteen hours later, she backtracked, reassured by the declarations of her successor, Donald Trump.

Like yet another « cliffhanger » in this never-ending soap opera, the future president has in fact affirmed, in a message posted Sunday on his Truth Social platform, his intention to sign a decree offering respite to the social network. He also wants the latter to be, ultimately, 50% controlled by American shareholders, and encourages companies – such as data hosts or application stores – to continue to collaborate with TikTok, guaranteeing them that they will not will not be subject to any prosecution.

Shortly after announcing its reinstatement, the social network replaced the message mentioning the suspension of the service with an insert welcoming users back, thanks “to the efforts of President Trump”. On Sunday evening, TikTok and the other ByteDance applications affected by the ban, such as Lemon8 or CapCut, were however still absent from the Google (Google Play) and Apple (App Store) stores.
