Big celebration at the World Cup: Switzerland beats Poland and is in the main round!

The starting position is clear: one win and Switzerland is in the main round of the World Cup. It quickly becomes clear that the national team really wants this victory. Not everything works out at the beginning and you are confronted with a 1:3 deficit early on. But national coach Andy Schmid’s team pulled itself together, went on a 6:2 run and took the lead with 7:5. Cheers erupt as the Poles take the timeout. But this had an effect, the Swiss conceded the equalizer immediately afterwards, but were able to pull away for the first time just before half-time with 18:15.

As against Germany, the national team comes out of the locker room better. Cheered on by around 300 loud Swiss fans, Felix Aellen and Lenny Rubin increased the score twice to 21:15. Is that the preliminary decision? Think. With the great success in mind, the Swiss begin to tremble, Poland fights its way to a 22:22 draw. Is the big calculation about moving forward now really beginning? Andy Schmid takes a timeout and shows courage. He brings new player material. Above all, Mehdi Ben Romdhane. Having previously been on the bench for around 40 minutes, he took his heart into his hands, scored three goals in the final phase and was partly responsible for Switzerland gaining a three-goal lead again and then swinging it home with a score of 30:28 .

NOTICED

Lenny Rubin once again set the tone in the first half. The 2.04 tower from the Bernese Oberland is responsible for the first three goals and is also the rock in the surf in the left back area. Together with Dimitrij Küttel and Noam Leopold, he is Switzerland’s top scorer with five goals. Küttel shows a strong game in the right back. Leopold is emblematic of the improved wing play and also sinks all of his seven meters. In the other wing position, Gino Steenaerts scores four times.

Defensively, defense chief Samuel Röthlisberger and Lucas Meister are keeping things together, and Switzerland also provides rock-solid coverage in Game 3. After two outstanding performances against the Czech Republic and Germany, it is far from being Nikola Portner’s day. This is how Jannis Scheidiger comes to his first World Cup minutes and holds his first ball. In crunch time, however, it is Portner who shows such an important save when the score is 27:24 and makes the Swiss bench, including coach Andy Schmid, celebrate.

But what stands out most on this Sunday afternoon in Herning is the Swiss collective. The national team currently seems to be able to overcome any setback suffered in the game. A good starting point for a successful main round.
