Iturralde, on the annulled 4-1 against Mbappé: “For me it is a goal”

One, two… And for the moment, at the break, there the count stopped. Mbappé. The French star celebrated the hat-trickbut Quintero González annulled the goal for offside due to interference (and a very tight one) after reviewing the play on the VAR monitor. At the beginning of the play, Rüdiger put a long ball to Kylian that Herzog, anticipating the Madrid forward, cleared. Figueroa Vázquez called Quintero from the VAR to review the play and after a minute examining the play on the monitor, he decided not to validate the goal.

“For me it's a goal,” said Iturralde GonzálezAS referee, in the live broadcast of Sports Carousel. “The referee understands that it is offside due to interference, Mbapée is running behind the defender, Herzog, but very close to the Las Palmas player. For me the goal is valid, because the Real Madrid player is behind and it does not prevent him from clearing. Since interference is possible, the VAR cannot give it as valid or invalid, because it is the referee who has to interpret the play.”

Iturralde insists that in any case, “it is a very judgmental move”. And he explains what must be considered to signal an offside due to interference and why he does not agree with Quintero González's decision: “For me it is a legal goal. The rule talks about interfering. Here it is not an objective thing, because he does not touch the ball. It can be interfered physically or visually. It's not visual here, because he goes behind the defender all the time.and it may be physical interference. Physical interference is that you are very close to the defender, you are going to challenge him for the ball and you put him at risk of clearing poorly or not letting him clear.”

And this is how Iturralde González argues his opinion: “Here, In my opinion, there is no physical interference either.because it allows him to clear at all times and the defender can let the ball go, not clear it… As I say, it is discretion. The referee considered that this closeness was physical interference, which is why he whistled. For me there is no interference, because Mbappé neither jumps for the ball nor touches the player.”.

Expulsion of Benito (64')

Quintero González went to the VAR monitor again in the second half to send off Benito due to a stomp by the Las Palmas player on Lucas Vázquez on the hip that, in the first instance, the referee only considered a yellow card.

A play in which there was also controversy because the referee stopped the game instead of giving Real Madrid the advantage. “In aggression there is no advantage. Imagine that the play continues and the footballer who commits the attack avoids a goal. That's why There are no advantages in red cards and the match has to be stopped.”, explained Iturralde.

Goal disallowed against Bellingham (73′)

And third visit by Quintero González to the VAR monitor. And for another offside due to interference, by Rüdiger in a play that ended in a shot by Bellingham and Valverde together. “There is interference here,” said an Iturralde who this time did share the referee's criteria.
