Union Berlin: Groundbreaking game – can the team take advantage of this suspension?

Things get serious early in the year for Union Berlin and the new coach. Steffen Baumgart has been on the sidelines for the Bundesliga club for two match days – but he has not been able to stop the winless streak.

There are two defeats against Heidenheim and Augsburg and the tasks are not getting any easier. With Mainz, an opponent who is in good form is coming to the Alte Försterei on Sunday (January 19th). But the Berliners could have an advantage.

Union Berlin: Opponent arrives with a ban

After 17 games, Mainz are in a solid sixth place. The team has worked for this: they have won six of the last nine games, including against Dortmund and Bayern. Union Berlin has been waiting for its first win for ten league games. But the FSV has to do without someone.

And on the sidelines. Mainz coach Bo Henriksen received a yellow-red card and is not allowed to enter the interior of the Alte Försterei during the game against Union Berlin. So he is not available to his team either. So he has to have his boys ready by kick-off without being able to intervene directly later.

Baumgart doesn't want to know anything about the advantage

Nominally an advantage for the Köpenickers – but their coach Baumgart refuses. “Teams don't work best because the coaches are jumping around outside, but because they have a good plan,” says the football teacher, explaining why his colleague's suspension doesn't necessarily have to have any impact on the result.

Only the team on the pitch can initiate the turnaround for Union. Much more important than the lack of coaching on the opposing side is how well Baumgart reaches his players. After Mainz, Union Berlin has games against St. Pauli, Leipzig and Hoffenheim.
