Ange Postecoglou could regret starting Pedro Porro for Tottenham against Everton on Sunday.

Postecoglou will be desperate for his side to pick up three points in the Premier League at Goodison Park on 19 January, with the Australian expected to be sacked if Spurs fail to win on Merseyside.

However, the Australian is unlikely to be feeling confident after Dominic Solanke suffered a crushing injury blow [via Paul O Keefe, 18 January] on the eve of what might be a do-or-die match for the Spurs boss.

With so many first-team players sidelined, Postecoglou’s team selection would have no doubt been difficult. However, the decision to start Porro, as confirmed via the club’s official X account (19 January), still seems like a strange one.

Ben Davies has returned to action for Spurs and starts against the Toffees. Therefore, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to give Porro a much-needed rest, with the right-back clearly struggling from fatigue in the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday (15 January).

As per Sofascore, Porro won just 40 per cent of his ground duels, while he was also dribbled past once, being humiliated by Arsenal star Leandro Trossard in the process.

In addition, he provided just one accurate cross from six attempts, while only 78 per cent of his passes were accurate.

However, instead of resting Porro, Postecoglou has opted to move Archie Gray into midfield. Therefore, the Spurs boss will hope this decision doesn’t backfire, with his job potentially hanging in the balance.
