Is Pete Dead or Alive?

The Couple Next Door tells the story of two married couples who become neighbors and whose fates end up inevitably intertwined. The show follows Evie and Pete, a recently pregnant couple who find themselves in a new suburban neighborhood because it’s the perfect environment to raise a child. The couple immediately befriend their super-sweet next-door neighbors, Becka and Danny. Now, it becomes clear right from the start that Evie’s got goo-goo eyes for Danny, and despite being aware of it, everybody seems to ignore it somehow. See, Becka and Danny are in a non-monogamous relationship (strictly in physical terms) and love to play around with other partners. Of course, Evie and Pete don’t know this at first, but when they do become aware, things suddenly get super messy, super fast. To add to that, this is a nosy neighborhood, so these guys have to keep their eyes open for any invasion of privacy. So, with that said, let’s dive straight into all the grand events of The Couple Next Door.

Spoiler alert

What Goes Wrong Between The Two Couples?

The series begins with the two couples being great friends. Their bond is especially tightened when Pete and Evie lose their baby unexpectedly. This pregnancy was already a lot of work because it was an IVF baby, which leaves Evie and Pete utterly devastated. However, since they, of course, need to move on with life, they do. Becka then invites them to go to the beach one day, and that’s when Evie and Pete learn about their open relationship. This leaves Pete super curious, and he asks a dozen questions because he has, in fact, voyeuristically noticed that they were with another couple one night and had an inkling about what was going on. However, it is actually Evie who takes a keen interest in the whole thing, because remember she already felt an animalistic attraction towards Danny?

Now, the couples end up going to a free spa that Becka has been invited to because of her social media following (it did sound kinda low, not going to lie). The girls get talking, and Evie tells Becka that Pete and she are open to trying with Becka and Danny. Now this is a half lie, because Pete never said such a thing explicitly. He might’ve looked like he liked the idea, but it clearly made him uncomfortable. To make matters worse, when they actually get to doing the swap, Pete becomes massively uncomfortable and stops midway. However, Danny and Evie go into the bedroom and go all the way, despite some interruptions, which I’ll get to later. This leaves Pete very disoriented. Then, when he learns from Becka that Evie told her that both of them were open to swinging, he gets upset and realizes Evie just wanted to sleep with Danny. Naturally, this makes him super upset with Danny, and it even follows through in their work life, but we’ll talk more about this a bit later.

Who Is Alan?

While Becka and Danny are living in oblivion, their creepy neighbor Alan has been keeping an eye on Becka for a really long time. By this I mean he has a telescope pointed right into their house, stalks her social media, and even goes to her yoga class. Alan gives off major incel vibes, but he’s married, and his wife can’t go upstairs because she uses a stick and needs assistance. Alan has left her under the impression that they’ve not a lot of money, which is why he’s not been fixing up the stairs for her, but in truth, he doesn’t want her to discover the numerous photos he has saved of Becka, or the setup he has to peep into their house. Alan ends up going into their home when they’re not around, finds the camera with pictures and videos of Becka with the other couple, and records them on his phone. Later, when he notices people commenting on Becka’s posts about him, he feels terrible, but he feels worse when Becka has liked all the negative comments about him. Then he decides to leak Becka’s videos and pictures on the “Not So Pure” website, where he claims she’s willing to do “anything.” This is all while they’re at the spa, and by the time she notices, the damage is already done. However, this is also the night that Jean, Alan’s wife, decides to go up and discovers Alan’s setup. When she looks into Becka’s window, to her shock, Alan’s there in a very compromising position. When he realizes she can see him from there, he has a stroke and passes out in Becka’s house. Jean calls the paramedics, but I’m wondering how the cover story of him being there to look for intruders works when his pants are down. Anyway, by the time the couple’s back, Becka’s lost her job, and Jean tells her that there was an intruder in the house, which is why she sent Alan there. Becka believes her, while Danny looks for help at work to find out who posted the blog.

What Is Danny Up To?

So it turns out Danny has another son with a woman he hasn’t been in touch with for a really long time. Their fling was before Danny met Becka, yet he still thinks it makes more sense to hide the whole thing from her. The other woman, Ethan’s mom, asks Danny to give her some money, and he goes out of his way to make sure he does it without Becka knowing. A ticking time bomb. Now to get enough money to pay Ethan’s mom, Danny’s job isn’t enough, so with his colleague, Gary, Danny ends up doing some illegal work for a diamond thief. There’s an accident, and they nearly get caught, but they’re safe. However, the diamonds are lost in the accident. Then Danny and Gary have to find their own way to get the diamonds back. By this time, Pete’s discovered that Danny is up to something illegal, and he thinks it could be his big story at work. Pete’s partner then follows Danny to the workshop, where he steals a key. After the big debacle with Evie, Pete gets mad and tells Danny to give him information or he’ll expose him. Danny manages to steal the diamonds, but he also leaks all of Robbie Spencer’s details to Pete, getting the bad guy arrested. But this isn’t the end of it. His partner, Gary, on the other hand, gets caught but doesn’t betray him, unlike how he betrayed his wife (whoops). The people who work with Spencer come after Pete, and Pete leads the guy to Danny as his “source.” Pete steals Danny’s gun, while the other guy beats him up.

In the meanwhile, Becka realizes their savings are empty and Danny’s been acting strange. She follows him one day and learns about his second secret family. Instead of confronting him, she directly invites Ethan over to meet his half-brother, Olly. Danny then tells her that he didn’t know how to tell her even though it was before they met and the other woman got in touch with him only recently. Evie then tells Danny she’s pregnant with his child too (whoops, a double whopper), and they have sex a second time at his workplace (get a grip, my guy). Pete discovers that his sperm is no longer motile and that the baby couldn’t have been his, so he gets mad at Danny too, hence the big threat to his job and life. Also knowing Evie’s pregnant with Danny’s baby, Pete nearly cheats with his colleague, making him not very innocent as well. However, she says no to him because he’s with Evie.

What Happens To Pete?

Eventually, Danny has to reveal the whole truth to Becka, and Jean instigates Pete into thinking that Danny and Evie have gone off together. Pete only blames Danny for the whole thing and thinks Danny stole his wife from him. In truth, Evie’s been slightly off right from the start; she killed their beautiful koi fish because she was mad about losing her baby. She was brought up in a very strict household and had a terrible relationship with her dad, who made her believe she was a sinner for using IVF. So she knew exactly what she wanted from Danny and got it rather easily.

She now believes that Danny and she are in love with each other. She tells her dad that she’s pregnant with another man’s child, not Pete’s, and she loves said other man. Her dad is appalled by the idea and encourages Pete to “set things straight,” even though he has a gun with him and clearly looks somewhat deranged (he’s hungover and mad, of course). It’s Evie’s mum who reminds him that he should help his daughter rather than abandon her, because it would make him a hypocrite. At the same time, Evie calls Danny up, telling him that her dad is threatening her after learning about their kid. It’s just an excuse to get him there. But Danny brings Becka along, ruining Evie’s perfect dream. Pete shows up with the gun and aims it at Danny. Becka tries to get in between them because she still loves the guy dearly. Evie tells Pete that Danny made her feel things she’d never felt in her life before.

The conversation is broken up when they hear a gunshot from outside. Evie’s dad kills the guy chasing after Danny, and this gives Evie the chance to run away. Pete chases after her after knocking Danny over. Then Becka tells Danny that he should stop Pete because Evie’s just a pregnant woman running in the woods. Finally, Pete shoots Danny in the leg because he tries to stop him from hurting Evie. Evie then explains to Pete how she’s not in love with him anymore and takes the gun from him in the process. She then shoots Pete for no apparent reason and cries about it too.

At the end of The Couple Next Door, Evie and her dad get arrested while Pete gets taken to the hospital. He may survive the wound after all, but probably not the heartbreak. Jean leaves Alan, and he’ll probably get arrested for being a pervert. Becka and Danny are safe, but Evie’s still hooked on him and might end up keeping the baby now she’s going to prison and all that. Guess Danny will be let off easy because he helped expose Spencer, or maybe he’ll be arrested; who knows? The show leaves us with all of these questions unanswered.
