“Supporters have the right to protest”, believes Sampaoli after the defeat of and the fans’ strike

hasn’t hit rock bottom yet, but it’s getting closer and closer. Fourteenth in Ligue 1 with only 17 points in 18 games, the Rennais lost again this Saturday in (2-1), following a third consecutive setback. Even before this new defeat, the Breton supporters had decided to demonstrate their discontent, going on an encouragement strike for half of the first act, the time to unfurl banners castigating managers and players.

The outcome of the meeting proved them right. While Jorge Sampaoli, the Rennes coach, had announced a “new cycle, the real reconstruction of Rennes”, the Bretons squandered numerous opportunities, and suffered the much more realistic Brestois law. An observation which did not prevent the Argentinian from estimating that his team had been “much better” than Brest. “The team was much better than its opponent, much superior. A little less in the first half but a lot more in the second,” he assured at a press conference.

“In football, we usually think that the team that won was the best but tonight it was Rennes who were better until the last minute,” he even added, counting “ 23 chances” in 22 shots. The Argentinian even felt that Brest had “done nothing to win this match”. Jorge Sampaoli explained this fourth defeat in a row for Rennes in 2025 by the lack of efficiency of his team and “childish mistakes” which were repeated and offered victory to the opponent.

Acknowledging that he was “very concerned” about the situation of the Rennes club in the standings, he assured that he understood the banners hostile to the managers and players brandished by the red and black supporters before the match. “I understand everything that has been said, given our situation. As for me, I work every day to ensure that the situation changes, but supporters have the right to protest,” he commented.
