In the city of Bern, a few hundred people gathered on Bahnhofplatz this Saturday afternoon to protest against the World Economic Forum. No permission was obtained for the demonstration scheduled for 3 p.m.
The World Economic Forum (WEF), which brings together numerous global political and business leaders, begins on Monday in Davos and lasts until Friday.
Numerous security forces were on site even before the demonstration began. The police officers stay in the background.
The demonstration, which reached Kornhausplatz shortly after 3:30 p.m., has so far been peaceful but loud. Speeches are given on Kornhausplatz. Individual pyros were ignited in the market alley.
As Bern cantonal police wrote on X shortly after 4 p.m., there was damage to property by the demonstrators. The participants were warned not to do this.

-Public transport is severely affected as the demonstration train runs from the train station through Spitalgasse to Kornhausplatz.
Trams and buses have no longer been able to run on the main route through Spitalgasse and Marktgasse since 3 p.m. Lines 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 19 and 20 are affected, as Bernmobil writes on the website.
“Part of the problem”
Smash WEF – smash the WEF: This is the motto of the WEF opponents this year. Im from left wing groups on the website barricade The published call for demonstrations states that, in view of the major crises, the powerful in this world are not part of the solution, but rather part of the problem. Even more: “They are the cause of these crises.” And from these crises – ultimately from the capitalist system – it is the youth who suffer the most.
In recent years, the anti-WEF movement has lost momentum. A few hundred people took part in the demonstrations in Bern. They were mostly peaceful. Neither the cantonal police nor the city authorities wanted to make any predictions about the size and course of this year’s demonstration.
In previous years, the participants ended the demonstration at the riding school. This time this is not possible because the cultural center is closed until January 22nd.
There are also protests against the WEF elsewhere. On Saturday morning, over 300 WEF and capitalism critics set out on a protest hike to Davos in Küblis, Graubünden. (Read the live ticker for WEF 2025 here.)
