The background to the crime was probably a relationship dispute. The suspected perpetrator, Benjamin R., comes from Gottsdorf in Untergriesbach, Bavaria, and lived separately from his 43-year-old wife. The first assumptions are that he probably couldn’t cope with the impending divorce. The couple has two children. The victim is 51-year-old Kurt H. from Oberkappel, the woman’s new partner. According to police, the woman was in the victim’s apartment and saw the crime. R. rang the bell and after a short time he shot H. down with three shots. The woman then called 911. The ex-couple’s two children, the 14-year-old daughter and the 18-year-old son, were in the father’s house.

Alarm searches on both sides of the border

The crime occurred at 8:40 a.m., and the emergency doctor fought for H’s life for about an hour. At the same time, an alarm manhunt was underway on both sides of the border because the police suspected that the perpetrator might have fled to Germany. The police helicopter, service dogs and the Cobra task force were also in action. At 10:40 a.m., an emergency call was received by the German police saying that a man had been found lying dead in front of a car near a forest in Untergriesbach. The dead man was quickly identified as the 44-year-old suspected perpetrator.

According to the Passauer Neue Presse (PNP), close acquaintances described the alleged perpetrator to the Bayern media group as a level-headed and calm person who had not previously been noticed with aggression. According to the PNP news ticker, no one can really explain this “outbreak”.

Oberkappel has around 750 inhabitants and is on the border with Germany. About 20 minutes’ drive southeast is Altenfelden, where two people were shot in a shooting spree on October 28th.
