Dozens injured, nine seriously, after a chairlift fell in the Astún ski resort

On the morning of this Saturday, January 18, an accident occurred at the Astún ski resort, in Huesca. At the moment, the details are unknown, but the Government of Aragon has confirmed at least 30 injuries when one of the chairlifts collapsed.

There are nine very seriously injured people, eight seriously injured and the total number is still unknown because they continue to be evacuated. At the moment, there are no deaths. The hospitals in the area – Jaca, Huesca, Miguel Servet, Clínico Universitario, Royo Villanova and Barbastro – are on alert for the arrival of the injured. The most serious is a woman who is being transferred by helicopter to the Miguel Servet Hospital, to which they also send injured people due to rib contusion, head trauma, back trauma and a girl with an open fracture. Fernando Beltrán, the Government Delegate, explained that the most seriously injured people “have already been transferred to different hospital centers” and that the teams are working on “the tasks of removing the people who are still on the runway.”

The 112 helicopter has moved to the scene of the event to help the injured and transfer them to health centers. Two medical helicopters from the Government of Aragon have also been mobilized, a medical helicopter from the Foral Community of Navarra, a GREIM helicopter, a rescue helicopter from Navarra, in addition to firefighters, 14 ambulances from 061, 25 Basic Life Support ambulances from Navarra, five ICUs and three Advanced Life Support teams with a nurse, a health center and several psychologists, as reported by the Government of Aragon, are 061 resources, Navarra and Red Cross.

All hospitals have been activated to receive the wounded, especially the closest ones (those in Jaca, Huesca, Miguel Servet, Clínico Universitario, Royo Villanova and Barbastro). There are extra health personnel who will go where it is most necessary and all available patrols in the Civil Guard area have been mobilized, in addition to all available troops 112 Aragón and 061.

The president, Jorge Azcón, and the Minister of Finance and Interior, Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, were in Formigal and are currently heading towards Astún, as confirmed by the Government of Aragon. The delegate of the Government of Spain in Aragon is also traveling to the area.

After the accident, the Territorial Civil Protection Plan (PLATEAR) has been activated in Emergency Phase level 1 from 12:00 today, as reported by 112 Aragón.
