The women’s World Cup is stopping in Cortina d’Ampezzo this weekend – in the town where the riders will also be fighting for Olympic medals in just over a year. Today’s departure not only brings with it thoughts of the Olympic Games next winter. It also brings back memories of the races last winter, in which several drivers, including Corinne Suter, Joana Hählen and Mikaela Shiffrin, suffered serious injuries.

From a Swiss perspective, the greatest hopes rest, as almost always, on Lara Gut-Behrami. We can also look forward to the performance of the young Valaisian Malorie Blanc after her exploit a week ago with second place in St. Anton in her first ever World Cup downhill.
The trip to Cortina d’Ampezzo is something special for Lindsey Vonn. The returnee from the USA has won no fewer than twelve World Cup races on the Tofana slope, six times downhill and super-G. (ram/sda)
