Emma Navarro battles through three-set thriller to defeat Ons Jabeur at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia (WCIV) — Emma Navarro, again, found a way to win a match that went the distance in the third round of the Australian Open.

In a bout that went to three sets, Navarro walked away with the 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Ons Jabeur in a bout that lasted over two hours.

“I came out really well,” Navarro said. “If I put myself in the best position to do what I want to do, I know that I will come out on top.”

Navarro, ranked No. 8, has played in three-set matches more than any other player on the tour currently. Navarro credits her stamina to her dad.

“We made up a term, biking and crying,” Navarro said. “I learned a lot of toughness growing up. A lot of thanks goes to him.”

Navarro jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set, before Jabeur rallied back to make things interesting. Jabeur would thoroughly dominate the second set. However, Navarro found a way to find her groove in a critical third set – pushing her way into the round of 16 at the Australian Open.

This marks the furthest she has gone in the tournament. During her first Australian Open, Navarro lost in the third round. She is in uncharted territory but remains confident in her abilities.

“It’s awesome to have so much support,” Navarro said. “It makes it really special to play here in Melbourne.”

Navarro is slated to play again Sunday, Jan. 19.
