The lights go out for Sahin

The reporting in advance was quite contradictory. According to ‘Bild’, Nuri Sahin should remain in office in Frankfurt even in the event of bankruptcy, while the ‘Süddeutsche Zeitung’ reported internal BVB voices calling for a coaching change before the Champions League game at FC Bologna on Tuesday (21 o’clock) plead.

His team’s performance in the first half in Frankfurt was a clear argument for Sahin’s immediate dismissal. BVB came across as erratic, unsettled and without ideas against toxic hosts. You can give the club legend credit for apparently giving a fiery locker room speech, as Dortmund’s performance in the second half was much better. Nevertheless: Sahin now has to fear for his job more than ever. At the weekend, the BVB leadership around Hans-Joachim Watzke, Lars Ricken, Sebastian Kehl, Matthias Sammer and Sven Mislintat have to make a groundbreaking decision.

What else was important:

The course of the game

Dortmund started nervously and had to survive a great chance from Hugo Larsson (2nd), before Serhou Guirassy hit the post in a lively opening phase for the black and yellow (9th). In the 18th minute, Frankfurt took the lead through Hugo Ekitiké and was then lucky that Knauff only hit the post (22nd).

In the second half, Dortmund’s game against a tired Frankfurt team became more pleasant and dangerous, but not compelling enough. Dortmund’s attackers called for penalties several times in tight penalty area situations, but referee Daniel Schlager remained true to his generous line. Shortly before the end, Oscar Höjlund put the lid on it with his first Bundesliga goal (90th + 2).

Sahin’s reaction fizzled out

Sahin reacted to the two defeats against Bayer Leverkusen (2:3) and at Holstein Kiel (2:4) by changing the basic formation. A defensive chain of five plus two sixes was supposed to give Dortmund stability, but it didn’t do that. Nico Schlotterbeck in particular couldn’t cope at all in his new role as half-back on the left side.

Knauff the new Marmoush

Because of the upcoming 80 million transfer to Manchester City, Frankfurt’s legendary striker Omar Marmoush was missing from the squad. Coach Dino Toppmöller replaced the top scorer one-on-one with Ansgar Knauff, who trained at BVB and was a constant source of trouble for Dortmund with his high speed. In addition, Hugo Ekitiké was bursting with enthusiasm to play and run in the first round. Without Marmoush, the offensive is now tailored to the Frenchman.

Torfolge

1:0 Ekitiké (18.): With a simple one-two with Ekitiké, Kristensen breaks through on the right, brings the ball flat into the middle and finds his center forward again, who finishes with one touch.

2:0 Höjlund (90.+2): Höjlund steals the ball from Can and Schlotterbeck one after the other, is free and pushes past Kobel for the final score.
